From 6 to 8 June 2025, the Sixth Guangdong Provincial Student Metallographic Skills Competition and the Repeat Competition of the 14th National Student Metallographic Skills Competition (Guangdong Region), which was hosted by Guangdong Provincial Society for Materials Research and organised by the School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering of Shantou University, was successfully held in Shantou University. As the selection contest for the national competition, this competition attracted more than 260 excellent students from 36 universities in Guangdong Province to gather together and have a fierce competition on metallographic preparation technology and microscopic observation skills. The representative team of Shenzhen University composed of nine students from the School of Materials performed outstandingly and won the first prize of the group. Two students, Li Jinming and Lin IGS, won the individual first prize, and four students, Wang Kaiye, Zhang Yongqi, Liu Dan and Peng Sijia, won the individual second prize. Five teachers, namely, Xie Shenghui, Zeng Yuxiang, Jia Junping, Luo Junxun and Wang Dagang, were awarded as excellent instructors.

The competition was divided into two tracks: "Metallographic Skills Competition" and "Metallographic Conference". Among them, the specimens of "Skills Competition " were "Ductile Iron" and "Industrial Pure Iron", which were divided into "Machine Grinding" and "Hand Grinding". and "hand grinding" two links, the contestants need to complete the metal specimen grinding, polishing, corrosion and microscopic observation within the specified time, and submit high-quality specimens and micrographs; "metallographic conference" covers the preparation of samples, analysis and observation and identification of metallographic spectra of the three parts. At the competition site, the contestants were fully concentrated, showing solid theoretical foundation and exquisite experimental skills. The judging panel scored strictly on the surface quality of the specimen, the clarity of microstructure, the standardisation of operation and the completion time to ensure the fairness and impartiality of the event.

The school's participation in this competition, from the preparation, training to the competition stage, were highly valued by the leadership of the School of Materials, the Department of Academic Affairs of the subject competition financial support. National College Students Metallographic Skills Competition is one of the most influential disciplinary competitions in the field of materials science and engineering in China, aiming to cultivate students' practical ability, innovation and craftsmanship, and to promote the reform of teaching and the development of practical teaching of materials majors in colleges and universities. By promoting learning and teaching through competition, it further enhances students' engineering practice ability and scientific research literacy.
